For Guerin Catholic girls coach Scott Miller, the refrain is familiar.

“It’s been a consistent theme, we have to value the basketball,” Miller said Friday night after the Lady Golden Eagles knocked off Lafayette Central Catholic who was ranked seventh in Class 1A.

In that win, Guerin lost 26 turnovers. Many of the miscues occurred while trying to break Central’s press and escape from defensive traps. Many times, a bad pass sailed out of bounds. The following day, against Indianapolis Marshall, Guerin turned the ball over 16 times.

The squad is averaging just over 19 turnovers a game. Their worst showing was Dec. 28 when they lost the ball 32 times.

The Lady Golden Eagles’ road in sectionals begins Feb. 11 at Brebeuf Jesuit against at familiar opponent in Marshall in Game 2 of Class 3A Sectional 26. Game 1 features Brebeuf and Bishop Chatard.

If Guerin wins, they advance to the Sectional Championship game. The Brebeuf/Chatard winner plays Herron for the right to get to the title game.

Guerin is 3-1 against sectional opponents, beating Herron, Brebeuf and Marshall in the regular season. Back on  Jan. 9, Bishop Chatard soundly beat Guerin Catholic, 76-43.

Media reports indicate that sophomore guard Sarah Yount suffered a sprained wrist in Saturday’s win over Marshall . Her status is uncertain. Young is averaging 10.7 point per game, leading the team with 54 3-pointers. She hasn’t been afraid to shoot from deep behind the arc, sinking shots from the between the circles on the floor.

Senior Carly Osinski is averaging 10.3 points a game and leads the team with 3 assists per game.

“When she attacks the basket, she’s one of the most athletic kids you’ll ever find,” Miller said Friday, mentioning the Osinski is a soccer player who is learning hoops. “She has got so much up-side if she continues to learn the game.”
